“You are selling your sincerity, Alex,” she said to him.
It shocked him, so that for a moment he couldn’t answer, and had to remind himself that it wasn’t up to her to make allowances, because she was ill. People thought her unyielding, because when she yielded she kept something back to herself. But that was senseless; he knew her better. He took her stare slowly and let his voice drop to the lowest register.
“I have never, Claudia, I have never been more sincere.”
She turned away again and studied a patch of sun on the stones.
“I didn’t say you were weren’t sincere. I know you are sincere,” she said. “I said that you were selling your sincerity.”
